Dever’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program focuses on teaching English Language Learner (ELL) students, which are students who are native speakers of a language other than English. Our ESL teachers help students acquire English through four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
We provide students with direct instruction in academic language based on the WIDA Standards. Our ESL teachers follow these standards and work consistently with classroom teachers in order to provide support to our ELL students. We provide meaningful instruction using multiple resources such as visuals, manipulatives, realia, rich literature, physical activities, and technology. ELL students are encouraged to practice their English through a variety of meaningful lessons that are based on their WIDA level. WIDA levels span between levels 1 through 6:
- 1st Level Entering
- 2nd Level Emerging
- 3rd Level Developing
- 4th Level Expanding
- 5th Level Bridging
- 6th Level Reaching
